Description

Hello! Philosophy once used to be practised as a way of life, long before it became a discipline within universities. I view philosophical practice as a movement to return philosophy to its origins. Plato has Socrates say in the Apology that the unexamined life is not worth living. This is because the ancients thought that thinking deeply about the human condition was itself a necessary condition for living a flourishing life. Rather than pathologizing distress, philosophical practice seeks to apply philosophical insights and careful, probing maieutic questioning to uncover and examine the causes of distress and the kinds of philosophy and philosophical insights that can be marshalled in response.

Education

Issues Any non-clinical issues.
Approaches I first carefully listen to you in order to understand you in your particularity and particular circumstances. Only after we have decided together that we have a firm grasp of your concern and the circumstances in which it is nested do we begin to discuss possible philosophical analyses and responses to the issue. I do not dispense advice or tell clients what to do. Like Socrates, I do not claim to know! I am not a life guru. My job is to empower clients to think and philosophize themselves about their issues themselves by (1) asking probing questions to help clients think their way to the ultimate principles (causes) behind their concerns and (2) work with clients through a range of possible philosophical responses. In clinical therapy, therapists teach clients coping tools to manage and resolves their problems. In my practice, I teach clients about different philosophies and philosophical positions that apply to their concerns and then teach clients how to philosophize about their concerns. My orientation is to be a student of the client. I am here to learn from you what you are like and what your concerns are., I am certified in Logic-Based Therapy, a modality of philosophical counseling derived from Albert Ellis' Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy. To learn about LBT, go here: https://www.philosophicalpractice.net/about-lbtc, My personal philosophical orientation to life is eudaemonism and Stoicism.
